Kannan Muthukrishnan est à la tête du programme de recherche de l’Institut français de Pondichéry portant sur la culture contemporaine tamoul depuis 1991, qui rassemble des sources – des journaux et des livres – dans la bibliothèque de l’IFP. Ce programme de recherche constitue un pont entre les champs d’étude isolés du Tamoul classique et du Tamoul contemporain. Les études, colloques, collections et publications proposés dans le cadre de ce programme s’effectuent dans l’idée de fonder un Centre de Tamoul contemporain à l’IFP.

Dans ce cadre, Kannan Muthukrishnan a dirigé plus de trente doctorants originaires d’Inde et de l’étranger. Il a été invité en tant que chercheur dans de nombreuses universités, en Belgique, en France et aux Etats-Unis (Université de Namur, Paris III, Sorbonne, INALCO, Université de Berkeley, Université de Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard etc). Il est l’un des fondateurs et membres actifs de l’Historical Atlas program de l’IFP.

Tenter d’écrire l’histoire culturelle contemporaine du Tamoul en Inde mène inévitablement à la question des sources. Il existe des sources en Inde, mais on ne peut y avoir accès. On remarque un manque de « fièvre des archives » (archives orales, écrites ou visuelles). Les recherches au sein de l’IFP portent sur cette lacune dans la culture indienne et cherchent à répondre à la question : En quoi consiste une archive en Inde ? Ces recherches impliquent un retour depuis les sources à l’étude jusqu’aux archives. Quel est le procédé à suivre ? Comment rendre une archive présente dans le contexte actuel ?
